Thank you for your generous contribution in support of the "Save The Light Campaign" with your tax-deductible gift to the Point Arena Lighthouse Keepers., Inc., a non-profit organization
Could you imagine our coast line without the Point Arena Lighthouse?
When the Coast Guard closed the station in the 1970's, a group of costal residents formed the Point Arena Lighthouse Keeper Inc. (non-profit) so that the lighthouse could continue to be open to the public for its enjoyment. Additionally, the mission of PALKI is to preserve the historical value of this landmark for generations to come.
Did you know that in 2008 this tower will celebrate 100 years of standing?...and has withstood gale force winds, corrosion, erosion, salty moisture and rain?
Little maintenance has been done during the past few decades and it now shows. Just recently a large block of cement fell off the bottom of the balcony at the top of the tower. Apparently it was only a patch, nothing structural, but
nonetheless the tip of an iceberg: enough to make us realize that, because of years of moisture penetrating the walls, rusting is happening along the rebar inside the cement; a phenomena called spalling. This tower was built after the 1906 earthquake, in the style of a chimney stack: it is the first lighthouse to be built with this reinforced concrete technique.
At the top of the tower, in the lantern room, a priceless 1st order fresnel lens warned many ships of the peril of Arena Rock for many decades. The prisms of this lens are currently being cleaned by Ray Hurst and Ken Reynoldson, (members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary) along with other residents of Point Arena and Gualala. They have spent many hours volunteering for this project.
PALKI is now facing an imminent, huge expense for the restoration of the tower. I appeal to every resident of our magnificent coastal communities from Irish Beach to Sea Ranch and beyond, and ask them to come forward and help with the restoration of this historical landmark. Every dollar, every hour volunteered, will help. Without your help there will be no restoration.
